It's been two days since Lance Palmer won his first Big Ten championship on Sunday afternoon. It took less than two minutes before he was focused on the NCAA Tournament. Ending the Big Ten Tournament on top of the podium Palmer avenged his only two regular season losses with a 2-1 win over Wisconsin senior Kyle Ruschell in the semis and a 9-3 decision against Iowa senior Brent Metcalf in the finals.
Wrestling as a true freshman Lance heads to nationals in Omaha as a three-time All-American. The goal is simple... to return as a national champion. A four-time Ohio state champion for Lakewood St Edward HS he placed fourth at the 2007 NCAA Tournament, eighth in 2008, and fourth in 2009.
This year Palmer and teammate Mike Pucillo are each in a position to join their former coach Tommy Rowlands as the only four-time All-American wrestlers in Ohio State history. Palmer is the only wrestler in the country in a position to earn All-American status four times in his first four years without the benefit of a redshirt season. Currently 27-2 on the year he is 116-31 in his career.
Lance Palmer will graduate in the spring with his class at Ohio State. At this point the NCAA Tournament will be the end of his wrestling career as he looks to be make the transition into mixed martial arts in June. Whether or not he leaves his shoes on the mat in March, Lance Palmer will always be a identified as a wrestler. A national title would be a great one career and a great way to start another.
