OU and KSU at the 2009 Hokie Open

Ten Ohio College Wrestlers Place in Salem

(Salem, Va.) - MAC Conference and Ohio college rivals Ohio University and Kent State traveled to Virginia last weekend to compete in the 2009 Hokie Open in Salem, Virginia. Over 325 wrestlers representing over twenty-five schools were entered in the competition. Ran by the Hokie Mat Club, the tournament was contested on ten mats in the Salem Civic Center.

Each weight in the tournament was seeded and wrestlers advanced through a bracket. In the championship brackets the losers of the semifinals automatically wrestled for third and fourth. In the consolation brackets the winners of the semifinals wrestle for fifth while the losers dropped into the seventh place matches. Each weight had its’ own mat and the tournament was run straight through without a break. Seventh place matches were uncontested. p>

Ten wrestlers representing OU and KSU placed at the Hokie Open. Redshirt freshman Chase Skonieczny placed second at 141 to lead Kent State while redshirt sophomore Andy Hartshorn placed fourth at heavyweight to lead Ohio University. Additional Golden Flash place winners included Ross Tice, sixth at 157; Sli Bostelman, seventh at 165; Keith Witt, fourth at 174; and Brendan Barlow, third at heavyweight. Other Bobcat place winners included Darrin Boing, seventh at 141; Nick Perdue, sixth at 184; and Kyle Sanders, fifth at 197 pounds. p>

Both Ohio University and Kent State will be action next weekend. The Golden Flashes will take the varsity team to New York for the Oklahoma Gold at SUNY-Brockport (NY) on Saturday. They will have a number of reserves competing at the Michigan State Open on Sunday in East Lansing. The Bobcats will take their entire team and have a number or wrestlers competing unattached at the Michigan State Open.
