After getting shut out of the medal rounds the first day of the Men’s Freestyle World Championships, Team USA came back on Tuesday with a pair of medalists in Jake Herbert and Tervel Dlagnev. Herbert won his first four matches to advance to the 84 kilogram finals where he lost a 1-0, 1-0 decision to place second. Dlagnev won his first three matches to advance to the championship semifinals where he lost 1-0, 1-0 decision. Tervel rebounded with a 2-0, 2-0 decision in the consolation finals to place third. As a team freestyle squad improved to sixth place in the team standings.

Other wrestlers that have completed their tournaments but did not place include Danny Felix (55kg), Shawn Bunch (60kg), Trent Paulson (66kg), and Jake Varner (96kg).

Varner was the only American to earn a victory on Monday. With wins in his first two matches Jake advanced to the championship quarterfinals where he dropped a 1-0, 1-0 decision. His opponent lost his next match and Varner fell one match short of a guaranteed placement. Felix and Paulson were both 0-1 on Monday while Bunch was 0-1 on Tuesday.

Ohio native Dustin Schlatter (74kg) is the only American that has yet to wrestle. His weight class will be contested on Wednesday and will complete the freestyle tournament.

Notes: Guidea lost a 1-0, 2-0 decision in his next match and Bunch was eliminated.



Trent Paulson: 66kg DNP (9/21)

Notes: Spiridonov won his next match but lost a decision in the quarterfinals to drop into the consolations eliminating Paulson. Spiridonov went on to win his bronze.

Notes: Kumar won his next two matches but lost a decision in the semifinals to eliminate Schlatter. Kumar won his bronze medal match.
